Honoring the Past, Looking Forward to the Future
The postcard above was printed in 1948 — and notice the name on it. Not Lake Wylie. Lake Catawba. That's what people called this place for more than fifty years, and before that, they just called it "the river."
When the Catawba Power Company built a dam near India Hook, South Carolina in 1904, they flooded a stretch of the Catawba River and created what they called Lake Catawba.1 It wasn't until 1960 that the lake was officially renamed Lake Wylie, in honor of Dr. Walker Gil Wylie, one of the founders of the original Catawba Power Company.1
But the name "Catawba" goes back much further than any dam or power company.
The People of the River
The river was named for the Native American tribe who first lived in the area. In their own language, they called themselves Yap Ye Iswe — "People of the River."2 That wasn't just a name. The river served as their drinking source, provided red clay for pottery, fertile soil for corn, and natural traps for fish.3 The Catawba people didn't just live near the water — they built their entire way of life around it.
That heritage runs through everything connected to this watershed. The Catawba rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains just east of Asheville and flows through some of the finest countryside in the Carolinas — past Charlotte, forming Lake Norman, and eventually becoming the Wateree River as it moves through South Carolina.4 Along the way, it feeds eleven lakes, a connected chain of water that defines an entire region.1
Why Catawba Boat Rentals
When we named our business Catawba Boat Rentals, we weren't just picking something geographic. We wanted a name that meant something — one that acknowledged this river, its history, and the people who called it home long before anyone built a dam or launched a pontoon.
Lake Wylie is where we started. It's where our fleet lives, where we've built our dock operations, and where we've worked hard to offer something this lake has genuinely been missing: a premium Lake Wylie boat rental experience where the details are handled, the boats are well-maintained, and someone is actually there when you get back.
The Waters Ahead
But the vision doesn't stop at Lake Wylie. The Catawba Watershed stretches from the mountains to the Midlands. Lake Norman, Mountain Island, Lake James — these are our waters too. Our goal is to bring the same level of service and care that defines Catawba Boat Rentals on Lake Wylie to the broader watershed we're named after.
The Catawba people were people of the river. We're trying to be worthy of that same spirit — taking care of these waters, serving the communities around them, and building something that lasts.
